Full course description
Being a library trustee is one of the most rewarding ways to serve your community, and it also comes with important responsibilities. This self-paced, online training is designed to equip library trustees in South Dakota with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to guide their libraries effectively.
Based on SDSL’s South Dakota Public Library Trustee Handbook, this training walks trustees through the key areas of board service, including roles and responsibilities, policies, budgets, advocacy, intellectual freedom, and more. Each module features practical resources, clear explanations, and real-world insights from experienced trustees.
By the end of the training, participants will:
- Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of library trustees.
- Gain strategies for supporting the director, staff, and community.
- Learn how to strengthen their board’s governance, planning, and advocacy efforts.
- Hear directly from current trustees about lessons learned and best practices.
This asynchronous training is hosted here in SDSL’s Canvas platform, allowing trustees to learn at their own pace and return to materials whenever needed.
*Complete all of the modules or select the modules that are most relevant to you and/or your board. You will keep track of your modules and time spent on each module on your Training Log.
